San Mauro la Bruca
San Mauro la Bruca is a small, peaceful hill village in the heart of Cilento, in the province of Salerno (Campania). Surrounded by green hills and woods of ancient chestnut trees, it provides an ideal location for anyone wishing to spend a holiday near the sea while at the same time enjoying the quiet and freshness of the countryside, with its opportunities for walking, trekking and horse-riding.
The village is conveniently close to the fantastic beach at Palinuro, famous for its beautiful clear water and the gentle cliffs which slope down into the Tyrrhenian Sea. It also stands within the Cilento e Vallo di Diano National Park, an oasis of great natural beauty surrounded by the mountains of Cilento.
As an alternative to swimming and sun-bathing, one can go on fascinating excursions in the Park to explore the local flora and fauna. An amazing 1,800 different species of native plants are to be found here, some of them extremely rare. There are many routes one can follow and natural habitats to explore, such as the Bruca woodlands, the gorges of Bussentine di Morigerati, the area around the Alento dam, and the mouth of the Sele River. There are also a number of paths around Monte Castelluccio, as well as Bulgheria, Gelbison and Cervati.
If you visit San Mauro la Bruca for your holiday, be sure not to leave without buying one of the typical local products, such as the excellent Cilento DOP extra-virgin olive oil, or the Silano DOP caciocavallo cheese, which is also delicious char-grilled. Again on the gastronomic front, in August of every year the colourful “Sagra della Salsiccia” (sausage festival) is staged. This is a delightful way to get to know the folklore and traditions of this amazing region.
